Jake: Our Apprentice - Hired or Fired?...


Jake joined our team last summer on an Apprenticeship scheme from our local college. Now that he's been here almost a year we thought it would be a good idea to let him tell you how he's got on, and what he's doing next!



Hi, my name’s Jake and I am the first apprentice to have been employed by Gadsby! This blog will hopefully give you an insight into my role here and how I have spent my time so far. It will also tell you a little bit about me and my experience as an apprentice within a busy sales environment.


I started working at Gadsby in July 2012 as an apprentice in Business and Administration. I was enrolled with Bridgwater College and for one day a week I studied alongside fellow students, all of whom were employed by a range of local businesses. I chose the apprenticeship route after studying A-Levels in business related subjects. At this point I decided I would be better to continue my learning in a work environment - and ‘wow’ - what a lot I have learnt in my 11 months here so far!



When I first started with the company my role was largely admin based. On a day to day basis I processed orders, took messages, helped with the filing of accounts and slowly started to learn about the products we sell. However, as my confidence and knowledge grew I was given greater responsibility within the team and began taking orders, contacting customers to answer any product related questions they might have, and very soon I began to build my own pool of customers who I now speak to on a regular basis.


Today my role is far more sales orientated and I honestly can’t predict what my day will be like! I have a diary of outgoing calls to make, but also pick up incoming calls and enquiries, of which there is an enormously wide range. I enjoy working with our customers to find them the perfect product solution, and enjoy the satisfaction this brings.



In short, working at Gadsby is great! The team here are friendly, fun and welcoming and they have given me the support and knowledge required to both grow and excel in my role. What is more, our customers are friendly and approachable, always happy to talk to me even if they don’t need anything that day! The busy sales environment and relaxed, happy atmosphere means that time really does fly and come next month it will be year since I started!


I have learnt so many things in this time, both from my course at Bridgwater College and from applying theory in practice here at Gadsby. The working environment is nothing like I expected before I started and has far exceeded my expectations of an ‘office job’!  I have learnt about so many different aspects of the business and have even spent time with our warehouse team and directly selling to customers in our on-site showroom. This has given me hands on experience with the products we sell and I really do appreciate the hard work that goes into making these handmade items.


Sadly my apprenticeship is about to come to an end... But I’ve been lucky enough to be offered a permanent job here! I’m really looking forward to getting to know even more customers and helping you with all your questions and queries for lots more days to come!
