ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

INTEGRITY & STEWARDSHIP

We believe that environmental considerations should be a key part of all our business decisions. Sustainability is a huge influencer on our processes and we constantly challenge ourselves to minimise our ecological impact and carbon footprint.

Our team work hard with production partners to improve systems and processes to lower the impact of our whole supply chain. We endeavour to help educate staff, producers and customers on how to behave responsibly and sustainably.

NET ZERO SHIPPING EMISSIONS

Our ocean shipping is now carbon neutral. We are hugely proud of this key milestone for our business. This has been achieved in partnership with Gold Standard. We support a variety of their projects that have a direct positive impact on our planet.

LOW CARBON ALTERNATIVES

Many of our key materials including willow and bamboo are naturally sustainable, but in other cases we actively suggest and promote eco-friendly alternatives. This includes low carbon products and FSC woods. We work with all suppliers to ensure raw materials are sourced in a sustainable and traceable manner whenever possible.

HOW WE REDUCE OUR IMPACT

These examples are a few of the practical ways we work to lower our environmental footprint and reduce emissions.

TRAVEL & COMMUNICATION

As a business we have invested heavily in technology to allow our teams across the globe to communicate effectively. Daily video conferencing between our offices in the UK and the Far East has helped minimise the need for international travel.

PRODUCT NESTING & PACKAGING

Our products are nested where possible, reducing the overall volume of containers that we ship each year. We actively police plastic use in our product packaging and contantly challenge our teams to reduce the overall amount of packaging materials that are used.

OPTIMISED SAILING SCHEDULES

We ship around 1000 containers (TEU) each year, so at this scale small tweaks to processes can have a substantial impact on emissions. Deadlines are monitored by our supply chain team and when possible containers are shipped via an alternative route with a lower footprint and mileage.

ECO-FRIENDLY HEAT TREATMENT

Chemical fumigation is the normal means of pest control for international shipping and is still unavoidable in many scenarios. To replace fumigation when possible we have installed a heat treatment plant at our UK site that achieves the same result with no chemical use. This is used whenever viable and is unique in our industry.

COMPANY CULTURE AND VALUES

At our heart we're a business that's built on stewardship and protection of the environment. Throughout our long history generations of the business have nurtured and tended to willow crops and helped protect our rural ecosystem.

The business has felt the effects of flooding during our time based on the Somerset Levels, and this makes us acutely aware of the potential impacts of global warming.

With our manufacturing no longer based in the UK we work hard to extend our values and culture throughout our whole supply chain. Our team carry out regular technical audits at production sites that not only focus on factors affecting product quality, but concentrate on environmental impact too.

Over time we have worked hard with our partners to improve their environmental credentials, helping modernise processes and install modern systems such as wastewater processing plants, often at substantial cost, where there is dying or painting involved in production. We are always looking for new ways to improve.

Now that our business is a truly global one, with the challenges that brings, we have scaled our duty of care to match. Protection and stewardship of the environment are, and will continue to be, a huge part of who we are.
