Our Journey to Net Zero
17 February 2025
At Gadsby, sustainability is not a marketing claim - it is a long-term operational commitment. As a sustainable packaging supplier UK, we recognise the responsibility businesses have to reduce environmental impact and actively work towards a lower-carbon future.
Our goal is to reach net zero by 2045, and we are continuously improving our operations, materials, and supply chain to achieve this.
Building a lower-carbon packaging supply chain
A key part of our carbon reduction strategy UK involves rethinking how our products are made, sourced, and distributed.
We prioritise:
- Natural, fast-growing, and reusable materials
- FSC-certified wood products
- Responsible sourcing and traceable supply chains
- Ocean freight over air freight wherever possible
By reducing reliance on high-emission transport methods and prioritising sustainable materials, we are steadily lowering the environmental impact of our packaging supply chain UK.
Key sustainability achievements so far
We have already made significant progress in reducing our environmental footprint.
Recent improvements include:
- Installation of solar PV systems across our operations
- 100% renewable electricity and gas supply
- A programme to eliminate secondary plastic packaging from imported stock
- Transitioning to sustainable packaging alternatives wherever possible
We are also working to reduce emissions linked to sample shipments by investing in UK-based prototyping and photography solutions. This initiative is designed to reduce reliance on air freight and lower emissions by up to 30% annually.
Increasing sustainable material usage
Material selection plays a central role in reducing environmental impact.
We have set a target that by the end of 2025, at least 85% of our product range will be made from sustainable materials.
This includes continued expansion of:
- FSC-certified wood packaging
- Recyclable and reusable materials
- Low-impact production processes
By increasing the proportion of sustainable materials used, we are reducing the lifecycle emissions associated with our eco-friendly packaging UK range.
Measuring impact with Planet Mark certification
We work with Planet Mark to measure and independently verify our emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3 categories.
This third-party certification helps us track progress accurately and identify areas for improvement.
Our measured emissions have decreased significantly:
- 2023: 21.9 tCO₂e
- 2024: 12.1 tCO₂e
This reduction reflects both operational improvements and a stronger focus on sustainability across the business.
Why carbon neutrality alone is not enough
Carbon neutrality typically relies on offsetting emissions through external schemes such as carbon credits, reforestation, or carbon capture projects.
While we do use offsetting where appropriate - including quarterly offsetting of ocean freight emissions - we recognise that offsetting alone is not a complete solution.
Instead, our focus is on:
- Reducing emissions at the source
- Using lower-carbon materials
- Improving supply chain efficiency
- Supporting long-term structural change
This approach is more aligned with achieving genuine net zero packaging UK outcomes rather than relying solely on offsets.
Our ongoing commitment
Sustainability is an ongoing process, not a final destination. We continue to invest in systems, materials, and supply chain improvements that reduce environmental impact while maintaining the quality and reliability expected from our packaging range.
Our journey to net zero reflects a broader commitment to building a more responsible, transparent, and sustainable packaging industry.
