Our Journey to Net Zero
17 February 2025
At Gadsby, we believe that sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s a responsibility. As the world moves toward a greener future, we recognise the urgent need to reduce our carbon footprint and do our part in combating climate change.
We’re always making improvements to be a sustainable and responsible business. From the materials used to create our products (natural, fast-growing and reusable materials) to how we ship them to our customers (predominantly ocean freight rather than air). It’s these commitments that put us in good stead to achieve our net zero target by 2045.
Some Key Achievements So Far
We have recently installed solar PV and, as of last year, our network gas and electricity supply now comes from 100% renewable sources. In terms of plastic packaging, we aim to remove all secondary plastic packaging from our imported stock and replace it with sustainable alternatives by next year.
Sample shipment is a big part of our footprint. We’re aiming to invest in UK prototyping machinery and factory photography studios to reduce our air freight emissions by 30% each year. Some production is carried out by groups that are not directly employed. We will ensure all workers have formal contracts in place to ensure employment is protected by 2026 (perhaps even sooner).
We’ll set up a formal framework for educating and training by the end of this year. This will pass on key craft skills that need to be protected and offer both a skill for life and increased earnings. In terms of the materials we use, we’ve worked hard to make sure most of our products are sustainable. By the end of 2025, at least 85% of our range will be made from sustainable materials.

Planet Mark Certification
We’re leading the charge in sustainability and gaining recognition for our commitment to a net zero future with help from Planet Mark certification. We recertified for the second year in 2024 and Planet Mark has helped us measure our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions for the past two years.
With our recertification this year, we have seen a huge decrease in our emissions. This type of third-party certification is a great way for us to collate data and properly look at how improvements can be made. Our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in 2023 totalled 21.9 tCO2e and in 2024 that number had decreased to 12.1 tCO2e.
Is 'Carbon Neutral' Enough?
In short, no. Carbon neutral means a company’s greenhouse gas emissions are offset, this could be through carbon capture and reforestation which is supported by carbon credit schemes. We use low-carbon raw materials and FSC woods. We work with suppliers to ensure raw materials are sourced in a sustainable and traceable way. We know where our raw materials come from.
We also are quick to address the negative impact of our global impact. Each quarter we calculate the emissions generated by our ocean freight then offset 100%. Offsetting isn’t a perfect way of reaching net zero but we think it’s a good first step.
